Where to start your collection
Decide on a focus before you spend anything. The trading card market is enormous and unfocused collecting leads to an incoherent collection with no edge. Vintage baseball, Pokemon Base Set, modern basketball rookies, football auto patches: each has its own price dynamics, community, and required knowledge base. Starting narrow and going deep is consistently more rewarding than broad and shallow
Set a budget for raw cards and a separate budget for grading fees. Grading costs between fifteen and five hundred dollars per card depending on service level and declared value. Factor that into your cost basis. Study the population reports for any card you plan to hold
A high-grade card in a thin population is a different proposition from the same grade in a bloated one.
CollectorGrade take
The collectors who do best in this market are the ones with genuine expertise in a specific category. Pick something you care about enough to study seriously. Your edge comes from knowing more than the market about the thing you collect.
