Sports Memorabilia guideChapter 06 of 10
Starting out

Where to start your collection

Chapter image placeholder

Start with a sport and era you have genuine emotional connection to. The knowledge required to collect well is deep and specific. A collector who grew up watching Jordan play basketball is starting with advantages in that market that no amount of research can fully replicate. Entry-level signed items for established players with PSA or JSA certification are available from a few hundred dollars and provide a foundation for understanding how the market works

For game-used items, start by understanding the documentation standards before you spend. A jersey without a team LOA and ideally photo-match research is a speculative purchase regardless of how good it looks.

CollectorGrade take

Emotional connection to the player and era is a genuine advantage in this market. You will study harder, learn faster, and make fewer mistakes in the category you care about than in one you are approaching purely analytically.
