Care

Storage, care and insurance

Chapter image placeholder

Art is sensitive to light, humidity, temperature fluctuation, and physical handling. UV-filtering glazing for works on paper and photographs. Consistent relative humidity between forty-five and fifty-five percent. Temperature stability more important than specific temperature level

Professional art handlers for any movement. Never roll a canvas unless you know what you are doing. Professional art storage for works not on display. Specialist conservation for any work that needs attention

Never attempt conservation on a significant work without a professional conservator. Insurance with Chubb, Hiscox, or AXA Art under a specialist fine art policy. Agreed value policies. Keep a current inventory with photographs, provenance documentation, and condition reports.

CollectorGrade take

Light does more damage to more collections than any other factor. UV-filtering glass or acrylic for all works on paper and photographs is not optional. Direct sunlight on any work of value is simply unacceptable.
