Storage, care and insurance

Store bottles upright. Unlike wine, whisky does not benefit from contact between liquid and cork. Standing upright keeps the cork from absorbing whisky and potentially degrading. Keep away from UV light

Direct sunlight fades labels and can affect the whisky through the glass. Temperature stability matters more than specific temperature. Consistent cool temperatures between ten and fifteen degrees are appropriate. Significant fluctuations are damaging

Maintain a current inventory with purchase prices, condition notes, and estimated current values. Insure with a specialist collectibles insurer who will provide agreed value coverage for the collection as a whole.

CollectorGrade take

The most common storage error in whisky collecting is storing bottles on their sides like wine. Whisky stored on its side has the liquid in contact with the cork, which can accelerate cork degradation and affect fill levels over time.
