Buying

How to buy right

Chapter image placeholder

Buy from the specialist auction platforms for most secondary market purchases. Scotch Whisky Auctions and Whisky Auctioneer both publish buyer guides and provide condition notes. Store correctly immediately. Bottles should be stored upright, away from UV light, at consistent temperatures

Whisky does not improve in bottle as wine does. There is no advantage to cellar aging once the cork has been applied. Buy condition: the fill level, capsule integrity, and label condition all affect resale value. A bottle described as excellent condition should have all of those factors correct

Research realised prices before bidding. The platforms publish results and the data is searchable by distillery and age.

CollectorGrade take

Whisky does not improve in the bottle. You are not racing against oxidation or hoping for development. What you are managing is provenance, condition, and scarcity. Condition at purchase determines condition at sale.
